Like in any sport there is the potential for injuries to happen. My family has had it’s share of busted lips (actually teeth embedded in a lip – see pic) to broken toes (more than a time or two) to road rash, skinned knees and blisters. Not to mention the times I’ve taken a finger nail file and filed down the callouses on the bottom of feet and toes. Doing that kind of makes you feel like you are working on the hoofs of your prize horse!
The worst of the injuries involve torn tissue in the knees and ankles or broken(major) bones. Fortunately I have not had to deal with that personally. In fact you would think that with all the jumping and running and turning these kids do, that you would have more of that than we see. I don’t know the actual stats but I would venture a guess that soccer has fewer of those type injuries than high school football. None of the girls my children have played with through the years have had any injury like that. We have had some torn knees but it didn’t happen on the soccer field!
The main ingredient to keep your child from having one of the more serious injuries is physical fitness. If they warm up properly before play and their muscles are
in proper tone for the activity, they should not have a problem. At times, from the strain, they might have a sore knee or a strained ankle. That is when the coach will give them some “down time” as the last thing their coach wants to see is a debilitating injury.
The worst injury I have seen happened to my oldest daughter while in a tournament in Houston, Tx. She and another girl when for the ball and her face hit the girl’s shoulder and it drove her two front teeth into her upper lip. What happened next was actually a bit funny. She immediately went to the ground and started looking around. We thought she had lost a contact. She thought that her front teeth were knocked out and she was desperately looking for them to have them put back in, not realizing that they were actually still there, just in her upper lip! A few stitches and some funny pictures later, the pain pills helped a whole lot.
Here’s what she looks like now! (Well, after a halloween party)
So this didn’t last long!
